Retiree loses over RM42,000 to ‘money-doubling’ scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A female government retiree lost over RM42,000 after being duped by an online syndicate.

Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said the 71-year-old victim saw an advertisement for a ‘money-doubling’ scheme on Facebook Oct 7.

She was then put in touch with a suspect known as "Ustaz Hilmi Firdausi" via WhatsApp.

“The victim was deceived into making five payments totalling RM42,580 using her savings.

“She was promised a return of RM300,000. However, after making the payments, the suspect asked the victim to make an additional payment of RM50,000 to obtain the profits," he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 17).

ACP Azli said the victim, growing suspicious, refused to follow the instructions and lodged a police report at 11.06pm on Thursday (Oct 15).

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama
