JOHOR BARU: Former minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad’s khalwat (close proximity) scandal will not affect the Parti Bersama Malaysia campaign in the Melaka polls, says Lee Chean Chung.
The Bersama co-leader said there are many issues happening in the country that concern the rakyat, and the party wants to focus on its state election campaign.
“Nik Nazmi has already spoken out (about the case), and we will respect the investigation process by the authorities, in this case, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).
“I will not pre-judge or take a stance on the matter but rather, focus on our mobilisation work to gain the people’s support,” he said after launching Johor Baru Bersama’s service centre at Taman Majidee here on Saturday (Oct 17).
Earlier on Saturday, Nik Nazmi confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by JAIS over an alleged khalwat case at a residence in Petaling Jaya on Thursday (Oct 15).
He said he went there with a woman after they decided to continue a discussion about a project there and maintained that they did not engage in any improper conduct that could raise suspicion.
Following that, Bersama co-leader Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said an internal party process would determine Nik Nazmi’s fate in the party.
