PETALING JAYA: Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has been suspended from all official party activities for three months, effective Oct 20, following his admission of involvement in a suspected khalwat case.
In a statement on Saturday (Oct 17), Bersama Malaysia president Syukri Razab said the party took the matter seriously and believed that issues involving its leadership and members must be addressed appropriately to safeguard its integrity, credibility and public confidence.
The suspension will run until Jan 19, 2027.
Syukri said the decision was necessary and reasonable, while acknowledging Nik Nazmi’s contributions and commitment to Bersama’s cause since the party was relaunched in May this year.
Earlier, Nik Nazmi confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in Petaling Jaya on Thursday (Oct 15) over a suspected khalwat offence.
He said he and several friends had initially discussed a project at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, before deciding to continue the discussion in Petaling Jaya to review related materials.
He acknowledged that only he and a woman were present when Jais officers arrived, admitting that the situation was a mistake in judgement. However, he maintained that they had not engaged in any improper conduct.
Nik Nazmi also apologised to his wife, their families and Bersama members and supporters, and said he would cooperate with any legal proceedings.
Jais said the two individuals were detained to assist investigations under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM3,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
