Fahmi to inspect Sepang circuit’s mobile coverage ahead of F1 return

PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil will inspect the Sepang International Circuit ahead of the Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix to ensure mobile networks can handle high user traffic.

The government spokesperson said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will collaborate with the organisers and venue owners to ensure telecommunication service providers can deploy equipment to boost coverage and reduce network congestion from high user volume.

“Those discussions are ongoing. I haven't been briefed yet on whether on-site planning is finalised, given we still have about six weeks before the event,” he said during the weekly post-Cabinet press conference on Wednesday (Aug 26).

“However, I will most likely conduct a site visit with MCMC and the telcos to inspect the plans, just as we do for other major events of national importance," he added.

F1 will return to SIC from Oct 2 to 4, with the circuit set to host the Bahrain Grand Prix as part of the revised 2026 calendar.

Separately, Fahmi shared that enhancement of border issues and cooperation on trade and halal products were discussed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Brunei.

Fahmi said the good relationship between the leaders of both nations has certainly borne fruit, and the Cabinet also extended its congratulations to Anwar upon receiving the Darjah Kerabat Laila Utama from the Sultan of Brunei.
