KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Day celebration provides the opportunity to appreciate the state’s history, identity and culture, while reflecting on Sabah’s role in the formation of Malaysia, says state Women, Health and People’s Well-being Minister Datuk Julita Majungki.
She said Sabahans must also continue to strengthen their spirit as Malaysians.
“We are not only a sovereign state, but we also respect our country as a sovereign nation.
“We have a role to play in ensuring that this country remains a place where we can live together and we also have a role to play in ensuring that this country continues to move forward with an excellent identity,” she said when launching the 2026 Matunggong sub-district level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang and Sabah Day Programme in Kudat yesterday.
Sabah Day is celebrated to mark the end of British colonial rule on Aug 31, 1963. Sabah became part of the new Malaysian federation on Sept 16, 1963.
Meanwhile, Julita urged the public to support the “One House, One Jalur Gemilang” initiative by flying the Jalur Gemilang at their homes.
She said the display of the national flag symbolised the unity of Malaysians of various races under a shared identity.
She also reminded the public to replace any damaged or worn-out Jalur Gemilang with a new flag.
