Rocky’s alleged owner charged in court

KLANG: A woman who claimed to be the owner of a dog named Rocky was charged at the Sessions Court here with committing animal cruelty against the animal.

S. Roghini Devi, 42, pleaded not guilty to the charge before judge Mujib Saroji.

The offence was allegedly committed outside a house in Taman Telok Gedung Indah, Port Klang, on July 29.

The charge under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

Rocky was alleged to have been beaten and strangled in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang on July 29 during an anti-stray operation.

Roghini, meanwhile, was charged with unreasonably pulling a male dog at the same location and on the same date.

Selangor Veterinary Services Department prosecuting officer Mohd Sharif Sabran proposed bail of RM20,000, with one surety, along with additional conditions that she surrender her passport to the court and report to the Selangor Veterinary Services Department once a month.

Lawyer Jeremy Vinesh Anthony, representing Roghini, said his client was supporting family members, while her husband is a person with disabilities.

“She is a mother of four and is seeking bail of RM3,500 without any additional conditions,” he said.

The court subsequently set bail at RM6,000 for the accused, with one surety, on the condition that she report to the Selangor Veterinary Services Department once a month.

The case has been fixed for mention on Oct 8.
