KLANG: A dog catcher involved in an operation by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) claimed trial at the Sessions Court here on Thursday (Aug 20) to a charge of committing cruelty against a dog named Rocky.
Muhammad Shah Idham Nor Haikal Shaharom, 24, is accused of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to the animal by strangling it with a looped rope outside a house in Taman Telok Gedung Indah, Port Klang, on July 29.
The charge, framed under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and punishable under Section 29(1) of the same Act, carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both upon conviction.
Muhammad Shah Idham, however, pleaded not guilty before judge Mujib Saroji.
Selangor Veterinary Services Department prosecuting officer Mohd Sharif Sabran proposed bail of RM20,000 for the accused with one surety, with additional conditions that he surrender his passport to the court and report to the Selangor Veterinary Services Department once a month.
Lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali requested bail of RM3,500, saying Muhammad Shah was not a flight risk.
The court subsequently set bail at RM6,000 for the accused with one surety, with a condition that he report to the Selangor Veterinary Services Department once a month.
The case has been fixed for mention on Oct 8.
