Victims were in ‘safe’ area when hit by Immigration truck, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Three members of a family, who were killed after they were hit by an Immigration Department lorry at the traffic light junction along Jalan Sultan Ismail here early Wednesday (Aug 19), had been in a designated safe area while crossing the road.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said CCTV footage showed the four family members at the road divider near the Jalan Sultan Ismail traffic lights, in front of Maju Junction, while crossing towards Jalan Chow Kit at about 1am on Wednesday (Aug 19).

“Based on our investigation and observation of the CCTV footage, the family was in a safe area for crossing the road when they were hit by the lorry.

“The CCTV system in the area is of a high standard and has helped us conduct the investigation,” he told reporters.

Comm Fadil said the lorry was travelling from the Wisma FGV building along Jalan Sultan Ismail and entered Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman while the traffic light was still red.

The lorry, which had its beacon lights switched on, was subsequently hit by a car travelling from Chow Kit towards Maju Junction.

Three of the four family members suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The lorry driver has since been remanded to facilitate investigations and further action.

The lorry was reportedly on its way to pick up detainees during an Immigration operation when the accident occurred.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
