PETALING JAYA: A total of 1,780 additional classrooms will be constructed nationwide to accommodate the expected increase in Year One pupils for the 2027 academic session.
In a statement on Wednesday (Aug 19), the Education Ministry said 524 projects worth RM668mil would involve the construction of additional classrooms across Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan.
“This includes the construction of 1,255 classrooms for mainstream pupils while 525 will be for Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) pupils, catering for an additional 43,925 mainstream pupils and 5,250 PPKI pupils.
“The Education Ministry, through the Sarawak Public Works Department, is also implementing 84 projects involving 210 additional classrooms,” it said.
The ministry added that these comprise 140 mainstream classrooms and 70 PPKI classrooms, which will cater for an additional 4,900 mainstream pupils and 700 PPKI pupils, at an estimated cost of RM81.5mil.
In Sabah, the ministry said 73 projects involving 112 additional classrooms will be implemented at an estimated cost of RM58mil.
These comprise 92 mainstream classrooms and 20 PPKI classrooms, catering for an additional 3,920 mainstream pupils and 200 PPKI pupils.
“Recently, several projects had already been completed ahead of schedule, including at SK Durian Mas, SK Banggol Peradong and SK Kampong Tengah in Terengganu.
“The remaining projects are expected to be completed in stages by December 2026, in preparation for the 2027 academic session,” the statement read.
The ministry said the additional classrooms are part of the government's commitment to ensure the smooth admission of six-year-olds into Year One from 2027.
