House fire believed sparked by charging EV

KUALA LUMPUR: An electric vehicle (EV) being charged is believed to have sparked a fire that destroyed a two-storey terrace house in Alam Damai here.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said it received an emergency call at 5.03am on Sunday.

“When firefighters arrived, the fire had engulfed the two-storey terrace house, with damage estimated at 100%.

“The fire is believed to have started from an EV that was being charged in the front area of the house,” he said in a statement yesterday.

No injuries were reported and the operation ended at 6.41am.

A total of 22 personnel from the Cheras, Sungai Besi and Bandar Tun Razak Fire and Rescue Stations were deployed.

For the record, 27 fires involving EVs and hybrid vehicles were recorded by the Fire and Rescue Department from 2023 to July 2025.

It was reported that 13 of the cases involved EVs, with the rest hybrids.

The number of fires has increased gradually, with a notable rise in 2024, particularly involving EVs which recorded eight cases.

Hybrid vehicle fires also continued to increase, with seven cases recorded up to July 2025.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 10, involving eight hybrid vehicles and two EVs.

A Fire Department official said the number of fires remained manageable but the upward trend warranted attention as EV usage continues to grow.
