MELAKA: Nurul Izzah Anwar (pic) has broken her silence over criticism of her decision to step down as PKR deputy president, saying she cannot please everyone and can only remain true to herself.
Amidst criticism over her decision to step down, Nurul Izzah said she had chosen to continue her struggle through civil society rather than directly through the party.
She has been granted leave from her post as the party's No. 2 leader following her request to step down for doctoral studies.

“Friends and fellow comrades, for some people, it was unacceptable that I lost in 2022. For some people, it was unacceptable that I won in 2025.
“For others, it is simply unacceptable that I am leaving in 2026. You cannot please everyone, but you can only remain true to yourself,” she said at the launch of the PKR Youth and Women congress on Friday (Aug 14).

On Aug 6, it was reported that Nurul Izzah would take leave following the 2026 national congress to pursue her doctoral studies.
The PKR central leadership council on Aug 8 turned down Nurul Izzah's request to step down, granting her temporary leave instead.
PKR information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that Nurul Izzah will remain a party member, while vice-president Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail takes over her duties in the interim.
