A FOUR-year-old girl with a complex congenital heart defect is waiting for a critical operation after her parents were forced to postpone it, Kosmo! reported.
The family is currently struggling to raise the remaining RM13,500 needed for the procedure.
Nur Adreena Raisya Parwira, the youngest of three siblings, was scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on July 14.
Her mother, Zaiton Derani, 42, said the family had received pledges of assistance totalling RM56,500 from several organisations, including the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK), Yayasan IJN and IJN Zakat Unit Sdn Bhd.
However, they still need to raise RM13,500 to meet the estimated RM70,000 surgery cost.
Zaiton said Nur Adreena, who was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex congenital heart condition, gets tired easily and has breathing difficulties.
“At times, we cannot afford the special milk required for heart patients. We buy regular milk when we can, but when money runs out, we have had to give her a syrup drink,” she said.
She said her daughter had undergone three procedures since the age of three months, including the replacement of a tube in her heart as she grew.
Nur Adreena continues to receive follow-up treatment at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II in Kota Baru and has undergone oral surgery at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian.
Zaiton said her family’s financial situation remains difficult as her husband, Parwira Omar, 46, earns an irregular income as a fisherman, at times bringing home only RM200 a month.
