PORT DICKSON: Chuah incumbent Datuk Yew Boon Lye has denied any role in vote-buying, three days before polling, after a video alleging cash handouts in the area went viral.
“I have never been involved in, condoned or instructed anyone to offer money or any form of reward in exchange for votes,” said Yew, who is defending the seat for Pakatan Harapan.
Yew issued the statement after lodging a police report on the matter at the Bukit Pelanduk police station on Wednesday (July 29).
He urged the police, the Election Commission and enforcement agencies to investigate and act under the law if any party was found to be buying votes.
Yew said the authorities should act just as firmly if their inquiries pointed to slander or false information meant to mislead voters, citing the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Election Offences Act 1954.
He said the source of the video remained unknown, with its origin, timing, location and the people in it still unverified.

MCA, on Wednesday morning, lodged a report over the matter at the Bukit Pelanduk police station.
Chuah is a straight fight between Yew and Barisan Nasional’s Pau Jeou Ching, with polling on Aug 1.
