BAHAU: Efforts are ongoing to strengthen the rail network as the backbone of the country’s transport system while increasing the use of public transport, says Anthony Loke (pic).
The Transport Minister said Putrajaya remains committed to improving rail connectivity nationwide as part of its efforts to provide Malaysians with a modern, integrated and sustainable public transport network.
“Through infrastructure improvements such as this, the government is committed to strengthening the rail network as the backbone of the country’s transport system while increasing the use of public transport.
“This is aimed at enhancing connectivity between regions and supporting more inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” Loke said in his speech at the completion ceremony for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Gemas-Mentakab railway line (Package A) here yesterday.
He noted that the rehabilitation and upgrading project also supports the National Transport Policy and the National Rail Policy, which emphasise the development of a modern, integrated, safe, sustainable and competitive rail system.
Loke said the Gemas-Mentakab project was originally awarded in February 2016 with an expected completion date of Feb 20, 2019.
However, the original contractor had failed to complete the works and its contract was subsequently terminated.
Recognising the importance of the project to the national rail network and the continuity of the East Coast railway line, the government resumed the remaining works under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
This was done through an open tender process managed by the Negri Sembilan Public Works Department (JKR), he added.
The project was successfully completed on June 19 this year at a total cost of RM41.7mil.
Loke commended the state JKR and contractor Asia Communication and Electronic Sdn Bhd (Asiakom) for completing the remaining works despite challenges, including encroachments and the need to repair and upgrade illegal crossings.
He said the Gemas-Tumpat railway upgrading project comprises three packages: Package A from Gemas to Mentakab, Package B from Mentakab to Gua Musang, and Package C from Gua Musang to Tumpat.
“To date, Packages A and B have been fully completed, while Package C remains under implementation,” he said.
Loke said the completion of Package A strengthens rail connectivity between the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.
“This will improve service reliability, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and support trade, tourism and industrial activities along the corridor,” he said.
Loke said the long-term investment in rail infrastructure would also encourage greater public transport usage, reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.
