PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 11 states and Kuala Lumpur, effective until 5pm on Monday (July 20).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Perlis and Pulau Pinang. Affected areas in Kedah include Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while Perak will see storms in Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak and Muallim.
On the east coast, severe weather is expected in Marang, Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu. Pahang will also see storms in Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong and Bera.
In the central and southern parts of the peninsula, the warning covers Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat in Selangor, as well as Kuala Lumpur.
Further south, affected areas include Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin in Negeri Sembilan, the entire state of Melaka, and several districts in Johor, namely Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Johor Baru.
Across the sea to East Malaysia, the warning spans multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Sri Aman (Sri Aman), Betong (Saratok and Kabong), Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah (Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song), Bintulu and Miri (Subis and Miri).
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 12.50pm on Monday.
