SEREMBAN: Police have detained a 52-year-old man to assist in an investigation regarding a social media post containing insulting statements that touch on the sensitivities of the royal institution.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad, said the man was detained around 1pm in a joint operation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at the district police headquarters here.
"Police also seized a mobile phone belonging to the suspect to assist in the investigation.
"The suspect will be taken to court tomorrow (July20) to be remanded," he said in a statement.
DCP Alzafny said police launched a probe following a report received on Sunday.
The complainant said the statement was uploaded on social media believed to contain insulting statements touching on the sensitivities of the Negri Sembilan royal Institution.
He added that preliminary investigations revealed the post was uploaded on July 17, while the complainant only noticed it on July 18 while at a restaurant in Senawang
"The case is being investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He advised the public to use social media responsibly and to refrain from issuing, uploading, or spreading statements that touch on the sensitivities of religion, race, and the royal institution (3R).
