PETALING JAYA: A special task force to monitor enforcement activities and tax collections at the country's ports has been proposed following a meeting between the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Customs Department.
In a statement Wednesday (July 15), the MACC said that Customs director-general Datuk Amran Ahmad had paid a courtesy visit to its chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
The statement added that both shared views and exchanged opinions on the challenges in carrying out their duties, particularly regarding Customs inspection procedures, bureaucratic hurdles, and various internal issues affecting the Customs Department.
"The one-hour strategic meeting served as a platform for bilateral discussions on the Customs Department's roles and functions, including mechanisms to combat leakages in container management under the department's jurisdiction at ports nationwide," it said.
The MACC also said that the Customs Department revealed tactics used by syndicates to evade tax payments, including smuggling activities and the falsification of information or documents as well as false cash declarations.
"In addition, the department also welcomed the MACC's involvement in promoting a culture of integrity through anti-corruption talks for its personnel," it said.
