KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 199 Public Works Department (JKR) projects have undergone the Green Rating Assessment (pH) as of last year, resulting in a 44% reduction in carbon emissions equivalent to 1.53 million kilogramme of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic) said 46 building projects and 44 road projects had also adopted the Green Product Scoring System (GPSS) to encourage the use of environmentally friendly products in JKR projects.
“A total of 52 projects had obtained the JKR sustainable development rating as of this year, including 49 road projects.
“It is only a beginning, and I hope more government projects, private sector initiatives and local authorities will adopt these standards in the future,” he said when officiating the JKR pH Day 2026 programme here yesterday.
In the Bernama report, Nanta said the achievement reflected JKR’s commitment to strengthening the sustainable development agenda, which should serve as a fundamental principle in every government asset development project.
“Sustainability is no longer an option or merely a complement to development.
“It is a responsibility that must serve as a guiding principle in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of government assets,” he said.
Nanta said this also reflects the spirit of the Malaysia Madani aspiration to ensure that every national policy and development initiative is implemented in a more responsible, ethical, inclusive and sustainable manner for the long-term benefit of the people.
He said JKR is not only responsible for developing roads, bridges, government buildings and public facilities, but also for ensuring that every government asset meet the highest standards of quality, safety and sustainability.
“We do not merely want to complete projects on schedule, but to build a legacy that can endure for generations. That is the true measure of sustainable development,” he added.
At the event, the Works Ministry also launched the JKR Sustainable Development Policy, JKR/SIRIM 2:2025 Green Rating for Buildings Standard and JKR e-pH System as initiatives to strengthen governance, standardise practices, accelerate digital transformation and improve green rating implementation efficiency and effectiveness.
