JOHOR BARU: Machap assemblyman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has been officially sworn in as Mentri Besar for a second term.

According to a post on The Royal Johor Facebook page, Onn Hafiz, who is state Barisan Nasional chairman, received the appointment letter and took the oath of office before Johor Regent, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, in a ceremony held at Istana Bukit Serene.

The ceremony commenced with the reading of the Mentri Besar’s letter of appointment by state secretary Datuk Mohammed Ridha Abd Kadir.

Also present were the Johor Council of the Royal Court president Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Ramli, and state legal adviser Datuk Abd Aziz Engan.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz expressed his appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for consenting to his reappointment.

“My appreciation to Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for having the trust in me to continue to serve as Mentri Besar for another term,” he said in a Facebook post.

Onn Hafiz also announced that with the Regent’s consent, today has been declared a public holiday in the state.

“This is to show appreciation to the Bangsa Johor for carrying out their duties during the 16th state election,” he said.

He also assured that he would continue to discharge his duties loyally for the betterment of the state, adding that he was aware that every decision he made would impact the lives of millions of Johoreans.

“May we achieve all goals targeted for the benefit of this state and its people,” he said.

Earlier, a vehicle carrying Onn Hafiz was seen entering the palace grounds at 3.40pm.

The vehicle left Istana Bukit Serene at about 4.50pm.

Onn Hafiz, together with Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had an audience with Sultan Ibrahim earlier in the day.

His reappointment as Mentri Besar follows Barisan’s landslide victory in the just-concluded state election, winning 48 of the 56 seats in the Johor legislative assembly.
