JOHOR BARU: All eight MCA assemblymen-elect will begin serving their constituencies on Sunday (July 12), a day after the party doubled its tally in the Johor state election.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had gathered the eight for an emergency meeting on July 12 midnight soon after the results were announced to instruct them to get to work immediately.
"I have told every assemblyman-elect that they must remain humble and always bear in mind the mandate entrusted to them by voters. Arrogance is absolutely not acceptable," he said in a statement on Sunday (July 12).
MCA increased its representation in the state assembly from four seats to eight, retaining Paloh, Bekok, Yong Peng and Pekan Nanas while capturing Tangkak, Jementah, Layang-Layang and Johor Jaya, as Barisan Nasional swept 48 of the 56 seats.
The four incumbents returned were Lee Ting Han (Paloh), Tan Chong (Bekok), Ling Tian Soon (Yong Peng) and Tan Eng Meng (Pekan Nanas), while Haw Chin Teck (Tangkak), See Ann Giap (Jementah), Chua Jian Boon (Layang-Layang) and Chan San San (Johor Jaya) delivered the party's four new seats.
Dr Wee said all the party's candidates, whether they won or lost, should rest on Saturday night and go out to thank voters the following day without delay.
"Serving immediately is what matters most. I thank the people of Johor once again for their trust and support — MCA and the eight assemblymen-elect will repay Johoreans with action and sincerity," he said.
Also present at the meeting were MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and vice-presidents Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng and Datuk Lawrence Low.
Barisan swept 48 of the 56 seats while Pakatan Harapan took the remaining eight, comprising six DAP seats, one Amanah and one PKR.
