JOHOR BARU: Clear weather greeted the start of polling for the 16th Johor state election on Saturday (July 11) in most areas across the state, except in Muar, which has been hit by heavy rain since early morning.
Bernama checks at several polling centres found Election Commission (EC) workers, security personnel and media practitioners at the locations as early as 7am.
At SK Seri Pantai in Mersing, the weather was clear, with voters, including persons with disabilities (PWD) and senior citizens, among the earliest allowed to enter the polling centre.
Similar weather was reported at Dewan Raya Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Johor Baru, SMK Senggarang in Batu Pahat and SJKC Kulai.
However, heavy rain since early morning did not deter voters from turning up at polling centres, including SJKC Limbong and SK Ismail 1, to fulfil their responsibility as voters.
More than 2.7 million voters will choose their representatives today to fill 56 state legislative assembly seats contested by 172 candidates at 1,076 polling centres across Johor.
Polling began at 8am, with closing times varying according to polling centres set by the EC, before vote counting takes place immediately after polling ends.
Before the state legislative assembly was dissolved on June 1, Barisan Nasional (BN) held 40 seats, followed by Pakatan Harapan with 12, Perikatan Nasional with three and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) with one. - Bernama
