Teen arrested over school stabbing in Banting

BANTING: What began as just another day in school ended in total chaos when a Form Three student was stabbed multiple times by another student, leaving the victim with injuries to her lung.

Police have arrested a 15-year-old student for attempted murder.

Sources said the suspect had not attended school for several months and had been undergoing medical treatment.

Before the incident, the suspect was reportedly seen entering the school compound wearing a black T-shirt and red-checkered trousers.

Teachers are believed to have calmed the suspect before police arrived. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was seized.

Videos circulating on social media showed students running for safety as a teenager holding a knife roamed the school compound.

Kuala Langat OCPD Supt Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi said police received information at about 9.50am yesterday that a female student was injured at school.

He said initial investigations revealed that the girl had been stabbed by another female student.

“The victim is receiving treatment at Hospital Banting and is in stable condition. The suspect has been detained and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder,” he said in a statement.

The victim’s father, Muhammad Firuz Ibrahim, 43, believed his 15-year-old daughter might not have been the intended target.

The deliveryman said his daughter recognised the suspect, who was her classmate last year.

“I don’t think my daughter was the intended target. She may have just been the one nearest to the suspect at the time and did not get away in time.”

He added that he was at work when he received a call from his daughter’s teacher informing him of the incident.

He rushed to the school before his daughter was taken to hospital. “Doctors told me that her left lung was injured and that they were removing blood that had accumulated.

“She is conscious and able to speak,” he said, adding that she also suffered multiple stab wounds to her back as well as injuries to her face and lips.

He said his daughter never talked about being bullied or having any dispute with the suspect.

Muhammad Firuz, who was met by reporters at the hospital lobby, called for tighter security measures in schools, including screening those entering school compounds.

The Selangor Education Department pledged to cooperate fully with the police investigation.

It said counsellors and guidance teachers had been mobilised to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers and the school community affected by the incident.

The department appealed to the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
