KOTA TINGGI: Amid talk of cracks within Perikatan Nasional, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali insists the coalition remains united throughout the Johor election campaign.

Downplaying the rift between Bersatu and PAS, Azmin claimed cooperation remained strong, with the parties helping each other’s candidates.

“Although we are contesting in different constituencies, there is good cooperation on the ground among our machinery.

“We are contesting under the Perikatan banner, so we will act and work as Perikatan in all the constituencies we are contesting,” he said at Gerai Muafakat in Jalan Sungai Siput here yesterday.

Azmin, who was campaigning for Perikatan’s Panti candidate Mohamad Alias Rasman, was responding to questions on whether Bersatu and PAS were still working together in the election.

The leaders of PAS and Bersatu, the two main components and co-founders of Perikatan, have been at odds since December last year.

Last month, PAS decided to terminate its political cooperation with Bersatu.

Despite the challenges facing Perikatan, Azmin said the coalition was embracing its role as the underdog in the race for Johor.

“We admit that Bersatu and Perikatan are entering this election as the underdog, but we have seen that the wisdom and political maturity of Johor voters are very high ,” he said.

“That is why, over the past few weeks, after travelling to almost every district in Johor, I have seen very positive momentum, especially among young voters.”
