KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians travelling abroad, particularly motorcyclists, must respect and comply with the laws and regulations of the host countries, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said this was important following a recent incident involving 17 Malaysian motorcyclists who were issued compounds in Hatyai, Thailand, for violating local regulations.
Ahmad Zahid said Malaysians should understand that laws differ between countries and avoid actions that could lead to legal infractions while abroad.
“This is important because we must uphold the spirit of Asean, which is based on mutual understanding, tolerance and respect among member countries,” he told reporters after officiating the closing of a charity ride event at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on Friday (Aug 21).
Ahmad Zahid said cross-border issues were regularly raised during annual consultation meetings between Malaysia and fellow Asean nations.
He added that strong ties between neighbouring countries should be demonstrated through mutual tolerance and a joint commitment to resolving issues.
“We must demonstrate the spirit of good neighbourliness and resolve issues through consultation and cooperation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid expressed hope that future motorcycling events could be expanded to coincide with the 220th anniversary of the police force.
He noted a proposal to involve 220 motorcyclists as a symbolic gesture for the milestone.
He added that motorcycling associations, particularly the Super Bikers Association of Malaysia (SAM), could be invited to participate.
"I also aim to take part in the event as well," he said.
