Fire razes two shoplots in Penang's Jalan Perak

GEORGE TOWN: An afternoon fire razed two multistorey shoplots along Jalan Perak here Thursday (July 2).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said the fire caused 90% damage to the corner shophouse and 80% damage to the second one.

"We received a report of a fire at a restaurant along Jalan Perak at around 12.32pm.

"It took our team a minute to arrive and we managed to get the fire under control by 12.44pm.

"The fire only affected two units along the row of three-storey shophouses," he said in a statement Thursday.

John said there were no casualties and one victim who was on the third floor was rescued during the operations.

"The man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, is safe and was not injured during the fire," he said.

He said the team is still on site carrying out overhaul works at the site.
