YAN: A hiker who survived nearly three days trapped in a ravine after falling while trekking at Gunung Jerai has been rescued alive on Tuesday (June 30) night.

The 34-year-old was found about 20m below the edge of a ravine in the Padang Tok Sheikh area after firefighters carried out a rope rescue operation.

The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters from the Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue Station were deployed after receiving an emergency call at 7.30pm.

Based on initial information, the victim was believed to have gone missing on Sunday and was trapped about 15m to 20m below the ravine.

Firefighters first tried to contact the victim from the top of the ravine before descending into the steep terrain using specialised rope rescue equipment.

The department said the rescue was successful and the victim later told rescuers that he had lost all his personal belongings during the fall.

"All of his personal belongings were lost during the incident, leaving him unable to contact anyone for help," it said in a statement.

The victim was fitted with a body harness and brought safely back to the top of the ravine at 9.37pm.

An initial medical examination found that he had not suffered any serious injuries and was in stable condition. He was later handed over to the police before being taken to Hospital Sungai Petani for further examination and treatment.

The operation, which also involved the police, the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Health Ministry, concluded at 11.36pm after the area was declared safe.
