GEORGE TOWN: A routine reminder turned hostile at Penang Hill when two hikers attempted to assault funicular station staff after being caught showering at a water faucet.
According to a statement released by the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) on Aug 14, the incident occurred near the lower funicular station – a common pathway leading to the 833m-high hilltop trails.
Images from the scene show two men using a back-lane faucet with one shirtless man apparently washing off sweat and grit after a hike.
When PHC personnel approached to politely inform the men that showering on station grounds is strictly prohibited, the pair responded with violent threats.
“Threatening or intimidating our staff is regrettable and unacceptable,” PHC said, reminding the public that the entire area is under CCTV surveillance.
It added that the corporation will not hesitate to take stern legal action against violators.
PHC said as part of the Unesco Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, the area’s facilities are shared public spaces intended for Malaysian and international visitors.
“We urge people to maintain proper conduct and respect our staff, facilities and fellow visitors to preserve the reputation of Penang Hill as a safe destination for everyone,” it added.
