BANDAR PERMAISURI: The Setiu district made history with the longest battered dish, measuring one kilometre, which was officially listed in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) on Saturday (June 27).

Setiu district officer Yusaini Amir Mohamad Nor said that the iconic programme, organised by the Setiu District Office, which took place at Laman Seri Rhu Sepuluh, Penarik, was successful with the participation of 21 individuals comprising batter-fried prawn traders around Pantai Penarik and Kampung Rhu Sepuluh.

He said the record was achieved through arranging 547 tables and using one tonne of prawns, equivalent to about 100,000 prawns.

"The supply of prawns was donated by leading local prawn farmer, Blue Archipelago. These prawns were fried by the participating vendors themselves according to their own recipes, uniqueness, and cooking methods before being served in a line along the beach," he said to reporters at the programme location in Laman Rhu 10 here on Saturday.

Also present were the Terengganu State Financial Officer Datuk Tun Ahmad Faisal Tun Abdul Razak and State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris, who witnessed the handover of the MBOR recognition certificate.

Yusaini Amir said that there are about 40 active batter-fried prawn traders in Pantai Penarik and Kampung Rhu Sepuluh.

He said that his team hopes the organisation of the programme can continue to promote the food tourism products of the Setiu district, thereby boosting the local traders' economy.

"This programme is expected to attract thousands of tourists from within and outside Terengganu, thereby increasing the occupancy rates at homestays and nearby budget hotels.

"It also opens up broader market opportunities for local downstream product entrepreneurs such as keropok lekor, chili sauce and handicrafts, thereby positioning Pantai Penarik as the country's main gastronomic tourism hub," he said.

The MBOR recognition event was the highlight of the Setiu District Cultural Town Carnival 2026, which took place over three days from June 25 until Saturday.

Throughout the carnival, various activities were held, including the Penarik Beach Run, attracting around 1,000 participants, the Beach Clean-Up Programme, the Planting of 2,000 Casuarina Trees for environmental conservation efforts, and exhibitions involving various government agencies.

The carnival is organised to promote the Setiu district as a tourism destination based on heritage, culture, and gastronomy, while also boosting the economic activities of the local community.- Bernama
