Haze forces closure of six schools in Tebedu

KUCHING: Six schools in Tebedu, Sarawak were closed on Wednesday (Aug 12) after the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading exceeded 200.

The Sarawak Education Department said the schools were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sejijag, SK Sungai Sameran, SK Tepoi, SK Entubuh, SK Temong and SK Tema.

"The closure is a preventive measure implemented in accordance with the provisions and guidelines of the Education Ministry, with priority given to the safety, health and well-being of pupils and the entire school community," it said in a statement on Wednesday.

The department said schools need not wait for specific instructions from the District Education Office or State Education Department to close if the API reading in their respective areas or districts exceeded 200.

"Principals and headmasters must act immediately based on the latest API reading in their respective areas. At the same time, schools must promptly inform the District Education Office or State Education Department of the closure for coordination, monitoring and record-keeping purposes.

"This approach is important to ensure protective measures for pupils and the school community can be implemented swiftly without delay," it said.

It said home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) would continue during the temporary school closures to ensure that pupils could continue their studies without disruption.

It added that schools must ensure effective communication with parents and guardians, while giving due attention to the welfare and health of pupils throughout the closure period.

"Schools are also reminded to continuously monitor the latest API readings in their respective areas and take appropriate action in accordance with the Education Ministry's provisions," it said. – Bernama
