KUALA LUMPUR: An online forex investment scam call centre operating from a luxury condominium in Wangsa Maju was busted following the arrests of nine Chinese nationals and a local man.
The raid was carried out at about 11am on Thursday (June 25) by the KL Police Strike Force following a public tip-off and intelligence gathering.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said officers raided a unit on the 17th floor of the condominium and found nine Chinese men, all believed to be in their 30s, and a Malaysian man inside.
"During the raid, we seized several laptops and mobile phones believed to have been used to operate the call centre.
"Initial investigations revealed that the Chinese nationals were involved in an online forex investment scam targeting victims in China.
"We believe the syndicate has been operating from the unit since early May," he told reporters after the operation on Thursday.
Comm Fadil said police also detained a Malaysian man, who is believed to have been responsible for delivering food to the suspects on a daily basis.
He said investigations are ongoing to identify the owner of the condominium unit, as well as any agents or masterminds responsible for facilitating the entry of the foreign nationals into Malaysia.
"The case has been handed over to the KL Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) for further investigation.
"We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods. Those with information can contact the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or the nearest police station," he said.
