RM2.10 diesel shows govt policies and int'l relations bearing fruit, says Mustapha Sakmud

KOTA KINABALU: The government’s decision to reduce the price of subsidised diesel to RM2.10 per litre nationwide from July 1 will directly benefit all Malaysians, says Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) said this is also proof that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s international relations and foreign policies are going well.

"Malaysia’s initiative in strengthening energy cooperation with countries like Russia and Turkmenistan as well as the guarantee of power supply obtained through strategic relations with main producing nations proves the Madani government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s energy resilience in the long term," he said here on Monday (June 22).

"The reduction in the price of subsidised diesel also shows efficiency in foreign policies, international relations as well as effective administration. This will benefit all Malaysians," he added.

He said this price reduction also shows that the targeted subsidy format and economic reform is starting to bear fruit.

Targeted subsidies using MyKad not only ensure that the target groups benefit but also reduce leakages and minimise smuggling which has long affected the nation’s subsidy system, he added.

Mustapha said this reduction in price is implemented when the world is facing uncertain geopolitical stress as well as pressure from global energy markets.

"The ongoing Middle East conflict forces us to take more strategic approaches in ensuring energy security and economic stability," he said.

Anwar had made the announcement at the cheque handover ceremony marking the transfer of Bintulu Port from a federal port to a state port on Sunday (June 21).
