KUALA LUMPUR: Literary figure and former chairman of the Bernama Board of Governors, Prof Emeritus Datuk Abu Bakar Abd Hamid, died on Sunday (June 21) night. He was 87.
His second child, Sabriza, 58, said her father died at about 10.30pm at his son’s home in Petaling Jaya after experiencing breathing difficulties
"He had been in good health, with a normal appetite, and was still active in his daily routine," she said when contacted on Monday (June 22).
She said the remains would be brought to Masjid At-Taqwa, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, here for funeral prayers after the zuhur prayer, before being laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery.
Abu Bakar, who was originally from Johor, is survived by one son and three daughters.
He served as chairman of Bernama’s Board of Governors from 1996 to 2000 and received various prestigious awards and accolades for his contributions to literature.
He was also appointed Universiti Malaya deputy vice-chancellor in 1987 and served as joint secretary of the committee for the establishment of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1968. – Bernama
