BAU: Sarawak will pursue discussions with Indonesia on establishing a proposed Borneo Chamber of Commerce, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Premier said this would boost trade by connecting the business sectors of Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan.
"This is a good direction because the volume of trade is already there," he told reporters after launching the Bidayuh Cultural Centre here on Monday (June 22).
Abang Johari said the idea of the Borneo chamber was mooted by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce.
"They will come here to discuss the proposal with us," he said.
The Premier also said Sarawak will open a trade and tourism office in Pontianak soon, similar to previous offices set up in Singapore and Brunei.
He said the new office will serve as a hub to improve economic ties between Sarawak and West Kalimantan.
"We already enjoy good business and healthcare relationships. If our ties increase, we may consider opening a bank there to serve the business community," he said.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari welcomed the Bidayuh Cultural Centre as a new landmark in Bau to showcase Bidayuh culture, music and crafts.
"I hope the centre will become a hub for cultural and social activities in Bau.
"You can stage musical performances and promote your handicrafts to international visitors, besides using it as a venue for community events," he said.
The RM9mil centre, funded under the state's Projek Rakyat initiative, commenced construction in December 2023 and was completed on Jan 28 this year.
It has a multipurpose hall, exhibition spaces and meeting rooms, while its architecture is inspired by the Bidayuh baruk or ceremonial round house.
