PN supreme council should have met sooner, says Bersatu info chief

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz (pic) has questioned why Perikatan Nasional had not called for a supreme council meeting earlier when numerous issues needed to be addressed.

The Perikatan supreme council meeting ought to have been convened as soon as the Johor state assembly was dissolved, and when there was a possibility that the Negri Sembilan state assembly would also be dissolved,” he said.

He said it would only be right for the coalition to hold a seat allocation and election preparations meeting after the supreme council meeting.

“Thereafter, a meeting of the Electoral Pact Committee with political parties that are not members of Perikatan should be held. Only then would the affairs of Perikatan Nasional proceed in an orderly manner,” he said.

Citing reports quoting a PAS leader, Tun Faisal questioned the purpose of the meeting.

“Was it to make decisions or merely to formulate proposals? Or was it simply to convey decisions that had already been made outside the Perikatan supreme council meeting?” he said.

At this juncture, it is widely understood that the Perikatan chairman is unable to make and finalise decisions, as he is only a vice-president (of PAS) and does not possess executive authority equivalent to that of a party president.

“Consequently, he (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar) must refer matters to his own party president, who is not a member of the Perikatan supreme council and to the PAS syura ulama council before any decisions can be finalised,” he said.

“Where, then, will these proposals ultimately be decided upon? If the proposals do not meet the expectations of certain parties, what action will follow? Can open statements be made challenging and effectively vetoing the recommendations of the Perikatan supreme council?,” he added.

Perikatan will hold an emergency meeting on Monday (June 22) to discuss the way forward for the opposition pact including the use of logo for the state polls and coalition party membership.

Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, in a meeting notice dated June 18 sighted by The Star, said that the meeting will be held at 8.30pm on June 22 at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Perikatan membership is stated as the agenda item for the meeting.
