Immigration detains 73 illegal migrants in Senai, Tiram


JOHOR BARU: Seventy-three undocumented foreigners were nabbed in an operation codenamed Ops Sapu in 17 premises in Senai and Tiram.

Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the raids were conducted on Tuesday (June 16) at 11pm.

“We are targeting residential properties and shop houses used as accommodation for these illegal foreigners,’’ he said in a statement.

Mohd Rusdi said our on-going intelligence surveillance and monitoring activities, the department found these properties have been used to house the illegal foreigners.

“Situation turned chaotic during the raids with some of them trying to escape, including hiding in narrow spaces and under the beds,’’ he said.

Mohd Rusdi said the 73 illegal immigrants detained aged between 10 months and 40 years.

He said they were 16 Indonesian males, five Myanmar men, four Bangladeshi males, one Indian national man, a Myanmar male child, 22 Indonesia women, 22 Myanmar females, one Indonesian female child and a Myanmar female child

“The detained foreigners entered Malaysia using social visit pass but abusing the pass by working in the country and overstayed in the country,’’ said Mohd Rusdi.

He said the illegal foreign workers have committed offences under the Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155).

“They are now being placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot in Johor Baru for further action,’’ said Mohd Rusdi.
