Johor polls: Amanah denies stepping aside for PKR in Puteri Wangsa contest

JOHOR BARU: Johor Amanah has denied claims that it agreed to hand over the Puteri Wangsa state seat to PKR for the upcoming Johor election.

Its vice-chairman Dr Zuhan Zain said the party had not made any decision or reached any agreement to relinquish its plan to contest the seat.

"Johor Amanah has made early preparations and organised its election machinery to reclaim... the seat, which was previously loaned to Muda during the 2022 Johor state election in the spirit of political cooperation at the time.

"The party has taken note of media reports quoting statements regarding the status of the seat.

"However, we are uncertain whether there has been a misunderstanding, confusion, or inaccurate interpretation of statements by certain parties," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 17).

He said that, to date, Johor Amanah remained committed to the spirit of friendship and cooperation within Pakatan Harapan.

"As such, we choose to address any differences in opinion through internal discussions and negotiations rather than through open polemics that could affect relations among component parties.

"We hope that all parties will uphold the spirit of solidarity within the coalition and avoid making statements that could create misunderstandings or unnecessary tensions.

"More importantly, efforts should be focused on strengthening Pakatan and serving the people," he said.

Earlier, a state PKR leader reportedly said that the party would be contesting the seat in the polls on July 11.

In the 2022 state election, Muda candidate Amira Aisya Abd Aziz won Puteri Wangsa with a 7,114-vote majority.

Before that, the seat was held by Bersatu, which was then a Pakatan component party.
