PICTURES and videos of traffic accidents often go viral on social media, leading to various allegations levelled againts those involved.

Once such viral video making the rounds shows a driver losing control of his vehicle and ramming into another car before crashing into a fence on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

Many of the comments on the video claimed that the driver was drunk at the time of the incident.

Is it true that a drink driver caused an accident in KL city centre recently?

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said, in a statement Wednesday (June 17), said the police were aware of a social media post claiming that a drink driver had caused the accident.

However, he confirmed that a breathalyser test on the driver came back negative for alcohol, contrary to the allegations.

Investigations showed that the Tuesday (June 17) incident involved two cars, driven by a 28-year-old man and a 29-year-old man.

"Preliminary investigations found that the 8pm incident occurred while one of the cars was travelling from Jalan Tun Razak towards Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra.

"While entering the junction towards Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, the driver of the first car is believed to have pressed the accelerator pedal excessively, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

"It veered onto the left road shoulder and crashed into a second car as well as a fence.

"Results from an alcohol screening test on the driver showed a reading of 000mg/100ml, indicating a negative result. A urine test also returned a negative result for drugs," he said.

He added that police have asked for CCTV footage from the surrounding area and also recorded statements from both parties.

He said the investigation was ongoing and urged anyone with information on the accident to contact the Jalan Tun HS Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999, or to go to the nearest police station.
