KUALA LUMPUR: Former minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed is among 21,858 new and returning members accepted into Umno under its Rumah Bangsa initiative.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki welcomed the members in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday (June 12).
“Since the party opened online membership registration on April 20 until the Umno supreme council meeting on June 10, a total of 21,858 new members, former Umno leaders and members, as well as leaders from Bersatu nationwide, have joined or returned to the party.
“This means that we gained that many members in less than two months,” he said.
Asyraf expressed hope that Umno would continue to receive blessings as it strengthened its role in championing the interests of the people and the nation.
Mustapa, better known as Tok Pa, left Umno in September 2018 after more than 40 years with the party.
He joined Bersatu the following month, when the party was part of Pakatan Harapan.
Mustapa announced his retirement from politics and resigned from Bersatu and all his party positions in September 2024.
Other prominent figures accepted under the Rumah Bangsa initiative include Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, Tan Sri Noh Omar, Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Mokhtar Samad.
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein also returned to active duty in Umno after the party lifted his suspension.
