KUALA LUMPUR: A rising concern over extreme modifications on motorcycles have led to greater enforcement with the authorities having seized around 300 modified machines to date.
Road Transport Department (JPJ) senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said they had increased their efforts this year to detect and seize such motorcycles as they pose a threat to other road users.
“Some of the examples of extreme modifications that we have detected included the removal of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) to bypass imposed speed limits, swapping tyres with bicycle tyres and even the removal of brakes,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Muhammad Kifli said JPJ has now employed a strategy to immediately seize such motorcycles and recommend such riders to be charged in court.
He also raised his concerns over the age group found with the modified motorcycles with some cases involving riders as young as 12.
“But most of them were in the 18 to 30 years bracket,” he said, adding that most cases occurred within Kuala Lumpur.
