Anwar urges voters to reject divisive politics in Johor

PETALING JAYA: The Johor election is an opportunity for voters to reject politics rooted in hatred, prejudice and racial or religious division, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the people want leaders who focus on safeguarding their interest and well-being, creating job opportunities, affordable housing, quality education and a secure future.

“They do not want those who rely on racial and religious sentiments as daily political capital,” he said in a Facebook post.

Acknowledging that not all problems had been resolved in the three-and-a-half years of his administration, Anwar said integrity was one matter that was not compromised.

“Our principle is clear. Each project must bring benefit to the people; each policy must uplift and improve their lives. Every ringgit must be managed responsibly and with trust,” he said.

On the launch of the Pakatan Harapan election machinery for the Johor polls, Anwar, who is Pakatan chairman, said the gathering has strengthened his confidence and resolve for the country.

He said Malaysians of different ethnicities – Malays, Chinese and Indians – were united by a common aspiration to build a fairer, progressive and dignified state and nation.

“With the Johor election just weeks away, I urge voters to exercise their democratic rights wisely.

“I urge you to reject divisive politics and support a leadership that promotes unity, safeguards the people’s interests and offers hope for the future.

“Choose a Johor that is fairer, progressive and dignified,” he said.

When launching the Pakatan election machinery on Saturday night, Anwar told the gathering that the upcoming Johor and Negri Sembilan elections should be where the people vote for a coalition that can manage the economy and take care of their welfare.

He said if it was up to him, now was not the time to have an election, including the general election.

“We have to manage the rising cost of living while the Strait of Hormuz has yet to be reopened as the war has not stopped.

“Why can’t we wait for a few more months before the situation stabilises before calling for elections,” he said.

Johor and Negri Sembilan legislative assemblies were dissolved on June 1 and June 5 respectively.
