Thunderstorms and heavy rain to hit seven states, says MetMalaysia


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across seven states, effective until 5pm on Sunday (June 7).

In Perak, the affected districts include Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar.

On the east coast, the severe weather is expected to hit Jeli and Tanah Merah in Kelantan, alongside Hulu Terengganu and Dungun in Terengganu.

The warning also covers Tanah Tinggi Cameron and Bentong in Pahang.

Further south, residents in Mersing, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru in Johor should brace for storms.

In Sarawak, the alert encompasses Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei), Mukah, Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu) and Miri (Subis).

For Sabah, the weather warning covers Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu and Beaufort), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud) and Kudat (Kota Marudu).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 3.05pm on Sunday.
