Preliminary reports received on bright lights in Sabah skies, says ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has confirmed receiving preliminary reports of a bright light seen in the skies over Sabah earlier this week.

In a statement on Sunday (June 7), the ministry said it received the report through its Space Authority Division (BPAngkasa) of a bright light sighting in the skies over Sabah on Thursday (June 4) night.

"No official reports have been received so far regarding the discovery of any debris believed to be from a space object, such as a rocket, on land or in surrounding waters.

"BPAngkasa is actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with relevant agencies," it said.

The ministry advised the public not to touch any suspicious objects and to immediately report any findings to the authorities.

"We urge the public to refrain from speculation and to rely only on information issued through official channels.

"Updates will be provided when further information becomes available," it said.

If suspicious objects are found, the public is advised to contact the 999 emergency hotline or BPAngkasa at 03-8885 8685 or via email at bpadg@mosti.gov.my.
