No confidence motion against MB fails to materialise

KANGAR: The Perlis State Assembly has adjourned sine die without the much-speculated no-confidence motion against Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah materialising.

Abu Bakar said the smooth three-day sitting demonstrated that relations within Perikatan Nasional in Perlis remain intact despite persistent talk of political instability.

“There were no issues that disrupted proceedings and no matters were raised that touched on anyone’s personal affairs,” he told reporters here yesterday.

He said the absence of any motion against him showed that attempts to sow discord between PAS and Bersatu had failed.

“These were attempts to weaken, destroy or split the relationship between elected representatives within Perikatan,” he said.

Asked about recurring claims involving statutory declarations (SD) linked to a change in leadership in 2025, Abu Bakar urged all parties to move on.

“We should stop talking about the SD issue and focus on strengthening our election machinery, ensuring unity within Perikatan and providing the best service to the people,” he said.

Abu Bakar was appointed Mentri Besar in December 2025 after Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Ramli resigned, citing health reasons. This came after several assemblymen withdrew support for Mohd Shukri.

However, in his royal address on Wednesday, Perlis Ruler Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin expressed hope that Abu Bakar would be allowed to continue leading the state administration until the end of the current term in December 2027.

Perlis has 15 state seats.

Following the 2022 election, Perikatan won 14 seats while PKR’s Gan Ay Ling won Indera Kayangan.

Currently, Bersatu holds eight seats, PAS has three seats, and three seats remain vacant after the assemblymen lost their seats following their expulsion from PAS.
