Simpang Renggam fatal crash: Teen rearrested over murder investigation

JOHOR BARU: The teenage driver previously remanded in connection with reckless and dangerous driving that resulted in the deaths of five in Simpang Renggam near Kluang has been rearrested for a murder probe.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the 19-year-old was initially remanded for two days beginning June 2 before the remand was extended by one day until Thursday (June 4) for investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The suspect was granted police bail upon completion of the previous remand period, he said in a statement on Thursday, adding that an application to remand him under Section 302 of the Penal Code would be made at the Kluang Court on Friday (June 5).

ACP Bahrin had earlier said that the June 1 crash at Kilometre 27, Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam, resulted in the deaths of four members of a family travelling in a sedan, including a 10-year-old girl, who were confirmed dead at the scene.

The teenager is suspected of driving recklessly alongside another vehicle driven by his 22-year-old brother, who succumbed to his injuries while on the way to the hospital.

The accident is believed to have occurred when one of the vehicles lost control before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with four other vehicles. — Bernama
