KUCHING: The sounds of gongs, laughter and traditional music echoed through Kg Segu Bunuk as hundreds gathered for the colourful Brarak and Bipajak Bisegu cultural procession, turning the village into a vibrant celebration of Bidayuh heritage and pride.
Now in its fourth year, the annual event is organised by the Segu Bunuk Association as part of the Gawai festivities.
Dressed in traditional attire, 21 contingents representing villages, clan associations and community groups from Penrissen, Padawan and Siburan brought the celebration to life as they paraded along a 1.2km route from the village information centre to the multipurpose hall.
“We organise this event so that the younger generation will know and appreciate their Bidayuh identity and cultural heritage,” said organising chairman Eric Niru Bina.
The Brarak (parade) was followed by the Bipajak, a communal feast featuring cultural performances by traditional dance troupes, creating a festive atmosphere.
Eric said the event serves as an important platform to preserve Gawai traditions while showcasing the richness of Bidayuh culture through its traditional costumes, music and dances.
“Through this parade, we ensure the tradition of celebrating Gawai is not lost to time,” he said.
The event has seen steady growth in interest, attracting visitors from Peninsular Malaysia, Japan and Europe last year.
