PETALING JAYA: Investigations into the Simpang Renggam crash that claimed five lives, including a family of four, have been directed to be classified under offences of murder and reckless driving causing death, says the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC).
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed the directive when contacted by The Star on Wednesday (June 3).
"The department will examine the relevant aspects of the case, taking into account the facts and other pertinent considerations before a final decision is made," he said.
Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh previously said a teenage driver has been remanded for two days to assist police investigations into a crash that also killed his elder brother.
He said the 19-year-old was remanded following his arrest after the accident at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam, Kluang, Johor, involving five vehicles at about 1.15pm on Monday.
Preliminary investigations found that the suspect and his 22-year-old brother were allegedly driving recklessly at high speed when one of the vehicles lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with three other vehicles.
Four occupants of one of the vehicles were killed at the scene, while the driver of the vehicle that lost control later succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital.
The four victims who died at the scene were identified as Mohd Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife Nor Azlina Abd Latif, 33; her mother Semek Mat Soh, 73; and Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10.
They were reportedly travelling from Melaka to Kota Tinggi at the time of the incident.
