Johor police launch investigations amidst state election reports


JOHOR BARU: Police have opened three investigation papers from the seven police reports received regarding the ongoing Johor polls.

Johor Police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said one investigation paper is under Section 435 of the Penal Code for the offence of treason with fire and explosives.

“One is under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing an offence and Section 41(1) of the Sedition Act 1948/Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988,’’ he said in a statement on Monday (June 29).

Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 address the offence of committing or attempting to commit acts that tend to incite sedition, as well as the improper use of network facilities or services.

“We have received 420 applications for permits from political parties as of 11.59pm, as of Sunday (June 28), of which 414 have been approved,’’ said Comm Ab Rahaman.

He said 191 political activities have been organised as of June 28, and each activity is monitored by police officers to ensure it complies with the provisions of law and the conditions set forth.

“The situation during the 16th Johor Election process is safe and controlled,’’ said Comm Ab Rahaman, adding Johor police continue monitoring the social media platforms.

He said they are working closely with the related agencies to detect and deal with the spread of fake news, content, and unverified information.

“Stern action will be taken against any party found to have violated the law which could disturb peace and order,’’ said Comm Ab Rahaman.
