KUALA LUMPUR: Visitors arriving at airports over the weekend were treated to a colourful welcome as Tourism Malaysia brought the spirit of Kaamatan and Gawai to the country’s major airports to mark the festivities.
The initiative was carried out in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Travellers arriving at Kota Kinabalu International Airport on Saturday, KLIA Terminal 1 yesterday, and Kuching International Airport today were greeted with a taste of East Malaysia’s rich harvest festival traditions.
The celebrations showcased the cultural heritage of Sabah’s Kadazandusun community and Sarawak’s Dayak community, whose annual Kaamatan and Gawai festivals symbolise thanksgiving, unity and harmony.
“These efforts are aligned with the broader objectives of VM2026 to drive tourism growth, encourage repeat visits, promote sustainable tourism development and enhance Malaysia’s multicultural identity,” Tourism Malaysia said in a statement.
The celebration at KLIA was attended by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, Tourism Malaysia acting deputy director-general (planning) Wizani Rosmin, tourism industry representatives and officials from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
