KUALA LUMPUR: Batik Air has launched its new direct service between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai, further strengthening its presence in China.
The carrier said its inaugural flight departed Kuala Lumpur on June 23, 2026 and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 1.20 am the following morning, while the return service subsequently arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 8.50 am on June 24, 2026.
"The introduction of the Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur service comes at an opportune time as Malaysia intensifies efforts under the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign. The national tourism initiative targets 43 million tourist arrivals by 2026, with China remaining one of Malaysia’s key source markets,” it said in a statement.
Batik Air chief executive officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the new route represents more than just enhanced air connectivity, serving as a catalyst for stronger economic, tourism and cultural exchanges between Malaysia and China.
"Shanghai is one of China’s most dynamic and influential cities, and we are delighted to welcome travellers from this important market to Malaysia. The launch of this service strengthens the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and China while creating greater opportunities for tourism, trade and investment between both nations,” he said.
Chandran said the route would play an important role in showcasing Malaysia's diverse tourism offerings ahead of VM2026, with travellers also able to connect to destinations across the country through Batik Air's domestic network.
"We remain committed to supporting Malaysia's tourism aspirations while providing seamless and convenient travel options for passengers travelling between China and Malaysia," he said.
