KUALA LUMPUR: Tougher enforcement is needed against illegal moneylending syndicates by targeting not only runners but also the masterminds, says Datuk Seri Michael Chong.
The MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head said stronger enforcement is necessary to tackle the root cause and curb the growing threat posed by Ah Long activities.
Chong made the call following a visit to the Brickfields district police headquarters, where he was briefed by Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Hoo Chang Hook on several ongoing investigations, Bernama reported.
He said ACP Hoo revealed that several Ah Long runners and their accomplices, suspected of involvement in a recent paint-splashing incident targeting innocent homeowners, had been arrested by Ipoh police.
The suspects, who are believed to be linked to multiple criminal cases, will be handed over to Brickfields police for further investigation once preliminary probes in Ipoh are completed.
Chong urged the government to review and consider reinstating relevant preventive laws to curb illegal moneylending and safeguard public safety more effectively.
Meanwhile, Chong said police had also briefed him on a case involving a college allegedly issuing fake certificates under Universiti Malaya’s name.
He said the matter had been referred to the Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department for further investigation.
